Milan’s Central Station a refuge for the homeless Welfare

Milan’s Central Station a refuge for the homeless

As arctic temperatures are forecast, the metro mezzanine hall of the Central Station will be converted into a mensa and dormitory for the homeless from 20.00 to 08.00, and closed to passengers, announced mayor Giuliano Pisapia.

The emergency welcome area will be operated by Linea Gialla – a non-profit organisation organised by the homeless for the homeless – municipal police, Civil Defence and Progetto Arca.  By 08.00 each morning it will be cleared and cleaned and again opened to metro passengers.

With this new structure, Milan’s anti-cold plan now boasts 1,464 beds, an increase over last year’s 1,192, according to a note on the mayor’s Facebook page
