The prolonged cold throughout Europe is causing Italy difficulties with its gas supplies from Russia.
The chief executive of Italy’s gas and oil group ENI has announced that it will suspend deliveries to some industrial customers and is ordering power plants to switch from gas to fuel oil to save on supplies. Residential customers of gas will not be affected.
Italy is also moving to increase gas supplies from Algeria and north Europe to make up for Russian short falls.
Russia’s Gazprom was forced last week to divert some of its export gas to domestic customers to cope with the sub-zero temperatures in Russia. Some of its supplies to European customers were down 30 per cent. Although the situation for most north European customers is now back to normal, Italy’s shortfall is still around 17 per cent.
Forecast for Italy are for more cold from Thursday 9 February.
